Serbian oil refiner NIS said Wednesday it had started construction on the country's first wind farm, a 120 megawatt project with a €160 million ($213.6 million) price tag aimed at diversifying an energy mix that so far has skewed heavily toward production from coal-fired plants.

NIS, controlled by Russian oil giant JSC Gazprom Neft, picked up a 50 percent stake in the Plandiste wind farm earlier this year. It splits ownership of the effort with Serbia-based renewable power developer Energowind, one of the founding firms.
