Iran has launched a new wind farm in Takestan, located in northwestern Qazvin Province, the Mehr News Agency announced on Saturday.
Two other wind farms will be established soon in Khorasan and Sistan-Baluchestan provinces, northeast and southeast of the country, respectively.
In October 2013, the managing director of Iran Power Generation Transmission and Distribution Management Company (TAVANIR) said that Iran will establish three new wind farms, each with a power generation capacity of 350 megawatts (MW).
Homayoun Haeri added that the company will ink deals in the near future with the private sector to design, establish, and operate the new wind farms.
Currently, the country’s total wind power generation capacity stands at 120MW, he said.
Iran has constructed power plants twice as many as the average number of power plants which have been constructed in the world during the past decade.
The country’s power generation capacity currently stands at 68.38 gigawatts (GW), he added.
Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan (including Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
