Officials from the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of The Gambia and some representatives of the Turkish private sector on Monday, May 5 signed a USD 15 Million Solar Energy project agreement.
This initiative, according to a press release sent to the Daily Observer would not only be a mere technological transfer to The Gambia, but also an environmental friendliness. This country, the release added, being a highly rated tourist destination and also known as the Smiling Coast of West Africa, needs a well-protected environment for both health wise and tourists attraction.
"With this project, the average cost of electricity in The Gambia will decline from approximately 28 Euros to 13 Euros and at a later stage even to 10 Euros. And there would be constant power supply," the releases stated.
According to the release, this is the first large-scale development project that has been assumed by a Turkish company in The Gambia. It is a strategic start for further discussions on other development projects in The Gambia, such as sea port, airport, highway and maritime transport, which could be financed through Turkish EXIM BANK credits.
"The Turkish Embassy in Banjul will spare no efforts in trying to further contribute to the development efforts of the government of The Gambia in line with the Vision 2020 of H.E. the President of the Republic Sheikh Prof. Alhaji Dr. Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh," the release stated.
The signing ceremony was attended by the deputy minister of Energy Dr. Edward Saja Manneh, Ms. Ada Gaye, permanent secretary Ministry of Energy, Mr. Ebrima Sanyang, managing director of NAWEC, the Turkish ambassador to The Gambia His Excellency Ergin Soner and representatives of the Turkish private sector.
