Concentrated solar power (CSP) plants met 3.7% of the nation's electricity demand during May 2014, according to figures released by grid operator REE.
When hydroelectricity, wind energy, biomass, PV and other renewables are included, Spain met 45% of electricity demand with renewable energy during the month, and 31% of demand with non-hydro renewables.
Spain a leader in PV, CSP deployment, despite recent policies
Over the first five months of 2014, Spanish PV met 2.9% of the nation's electricity demand, and CSP another 1.6%. Spain has one of the highest portions of electricity demand met with solar technologies in the world, roughly equal to Germany and behind only Italy on an annualized basis.
The nation also has the largest installed capacity of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants in the world, and meets a larger portion of electricity demand with CSP than any other nation.
This is despite a halt to most new PV and CSP projects in the nation due to unfavorable and retroactive policies imposed by the Spanish government.
