Bahrain has launched a new solar power plant worth USD25 million, and is expected to make the kingdom become a world leader in solar innovation, according to Gulf Daily News.

The inauguration of the plant was held under the patronage of Finance Minister and Minister in charge of Oil and Gas Affairs, National Oil and Gas Authority (Noga) chairman Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, and Bapco chairman Adel Almoayyed.

The five megawatt project in Awali is expected to deliver 8,000 MW of clean renewable energy.

Mr Almoayyed said: "Bapco is very excited about the project, which being the first of its kind in the Middle East, will be a proud showcase."

He added: "The project enables the establishment of a renewal energy industry as part of the national economy, creating job opportunities and also reducing the reliance on natural gas."
