Mr Ban Ki-moon said the country has a vast potential to generate power from sun, wind and water. Wind power itself contributes almost 30 per cent of all energy in Nicaragua.

The UN chief said he was "impressed" with a wind farm project he visited in the Department of Rivas.

"Almost one quarter of Nicaragua's capacity to generate wind power will reduce greenhouse gases by more than 100,000 tons of CO2 each year. Your country has vast potential of renewable energy sources, solar. You have a very strong constant wind, long summers and hydro and you are quite lucky to have unlimited resources. This can provide modern energy that your people need and governments need to promote the MDG to eradicate extreme poverty and promote global health and many other development issues."

Mr Ban said Nicaragua understands that energy is essential to implement the UN anti-poverty goals or MDGs as well as to shape the post-2015 development agenda.

A Climate Summit is scheduled to take place in New York this year convened by the Secretary-General.
