UK record: nearly 15% of electricity from renewables, more than half from wind power

Offshorewindpower generationintheU.K. increasedby52% lastyear, andonshorewind energy generationwasup40% intheregion, accordingtoanewreportfromtheDepartmentofEnergyandClimateChange (DECC). 

Furthermore, thereportsayselectricitygeneratedfromrenewablesourcesincreasedby30% in2013comparedtothepreviousyear, thusaccountingfor14.9% oftotalU.K. electricitygeneration.

CitingtheDECCstatistics, advocacygroupRenewableUKsaysonshorewindcontinuedtobetheleadingtechnologyforgeneratingelectricityfromrenewablesources, providing32% ofthetotal, whileoffshorewindgeneratedafurther21% - makingatotalof53% ofallrenewableenergyfromwind. RenewableUKsaysthismeansthat7.9% oftheU.K.’selectricitywasgeneratedbyonshoreandoffshorewindin2013.

Thisabundanceofexcellentstatisticsshouldmakethoseingovernmentwhohavefailedtosupportwindenergysitupandtakenotice,” saysGordonEdge, RenewableUKsdirectorofpolicy. “MorethanhalfofBritainscleanelectricitynowcomesfromonshoreandoffshorewind. Werenowoncoursetohit10percentofelectricityfromwindalonethisyear.”
