Renewable energy sources generated 34.6% of the total mix in August 2014 in Spain

Renewable energy sources generated 34.6% of the total mix in August 2014, preliminary data from Spanish electricity grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) showed today.

As much as 52.9% of the total energy output in Spain came from technologies with no carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, REE added.

In terms of the different sources of renewable energy generation, wind energy in the country had the biggest share, accounting for 14% of the total. 
The wind power output was 2,708 GWh in August 2014, down 14.6%. Solar photovoltaic (PV) generated 4.2% of the total mix, and the share of concentrated solar power (CSP) plants was 4,2%. The hydroelectric power plants (HPP) in Spain accounted for 10.1%.
Gross electricity demand in mainland Spain in August 2014 stood at 20,235 GWh, down 1.8% on the year. Total electricity demand in calendar adjusted terms rose by 0.1%.
As for the accumulated January to August period, the total electricity demand in the country reached 162,345 GWh, down 1.4% year-on-year.
