The meteorological conditions in August proved favourable to renewable energy production that correspondingly accounted for 40% of monthly energy consumption according to figures released by REN, the national grid operator, on Monday.

Wind power was able to outstrip average August production by 5% whilst solar power production for the first time ever accounted for over 2% of monthly consumption.

That 40% figure for renewable production however stands against an overall 67% contribution throughout the first eight months with wind and hydroelectric production registering above average performances of 34% and 19% respectively.

Hydro power ensured 35% of consumption, wind energy 25%, biomass 6% whilst solar power chipped in with just 1%.

In terms of recourse to fossil fuels to power the national grid, the REN statement said that burning coal and natural gas had provided for 20% and 12% of the electricity produced in the first eight months of this year.
