Germany had reached its previous record of 23.4 GW on June 6th, 2013.
The German government decided to abandon nuclear power after the Fukushima nuclear disaster last year, closing eight plants immediately and shutting down the remaining nine by 2022. They will be replaced by renewable energy sources such as wind energy, solar power and biomass.
SMA Solar Technology AG's (Niestetal, Germany) PV Performance Indicator shows that Germany has set yet another record for photovoltaic performance, reaching 23.7 GW between 1 and 2 PM German time on July 7th, 2013.
A previous record of 23.4 GW was set on June 6th, 2013 at 2:19 PM. As German peak electricity demand during the day is 60 GW, this means that German electricity production from PV has peaked at around 40% of peak demand at least twice this summer so far.
In a separate record, the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (IWR, Münster, Germany) reports that wind and PV peaked at over 60% of demand between 2 and 3 PM on June 16th, 2013, with an combined output of 29.6 GW.
