Ukraine added 18.32 MW of new wind power capacity during the first six months of 2013. At the end of June the total wind capacity reached 315.76 MW, out of which 290.76 MW were connected to the national electricity grid, according to the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA).

In addition, several other wind energy projects are under construction on a number of sites located namely in Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions as well as in Crimea. The total investment amounts to about €84 million.

UWEA expects to install another 180 MW in 2013 bringing the total to about 500 MW. The top three producers in Ukraine are Wind Parks of Ukraine, LLC and Wind Power (DTEK).

According to a survey conducted by the experts of Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA) from January 1, 2013 to June 30, 2013 18.32 MW of new wind energy capacity were added in Ukraine. The total wind capacity reached 315.76 MW by June 30, 2013 out of which 290.76 MW were fully grid connected and have been selling electricity at "green" tariff. In addition, the construction works have started on a number of sites located in Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions as well as in the Crimea. The total investment amounted to about 84 mln euro.

UWEA expects a national installed wind capacity of about 500 MW by the end of 2013 - the first decade of 2014.

Managing Company Wind Parks of Ukraine, LLC and Wind Power (DTEK), LLC retain their leading positions in the Ukrainian wind energy industry.

For a half year period the 12 wind turbines were erected and put into operation at 6 wind power plants.

Furlaender Windtechnolodgy LLC won a tender for a supply of 22 wind turbines of
2 MW unit capacity produced in Ukraine under a license from the German company, for a 45- MW wind farm in the town of Yereimentau, Akmola region of Kazakhstan. It can be considered as a competitiveness indicator of wind turbines of Ukrainian production on the territory of the former Soviet Union (five Western companies participated in the tender). This project is not only the first modern wind farm to be constructed in Kazakhstan but also the first wind farm located outside of Ukraine where modern MW-class wind turbines of Ukrainian production to be installed.

Over the past six months number of new small wind turbines installed in Ukraine has been dramatically reduced. The major obstacle for a further penetration of small wind turbine technologies has been a lack of opportunities to sell electricity generated by small wind turbines at "green" tariff (in contrast to solar systems with rated capacity less 10 kW mounted on the roof of private houses in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On Electric Power Industry" on Promoting Electricity Generation from Alternative Energy Sources" No. 5485-V, dd November 20, 2012). Lack of legislative support for small wind energy sector has already led to a sharp decline in sales and resulted in a reduction of the national production of small wind installations.

"The imperfection of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine till 2030 with respect to the share of electricity from renewable energy sources in the national mix, the lack of the national strategy for the development of the renewable electricity industry to regulate grid connection issues represent the major barriers for intensive development of wind power projects in the country" says  Andrey Konechenkov, Chairman of the UWEA Board.
