President Danilo Medina inaugurated the $6 million solar energy plant at the Cibao International Airport in the northern Dominican Republic.

The 1.5 MW power plant has 5,880 solar panels that generate electricity.
The plant is the largest clean energy project in the Dominican Republic and the most ambitious project of its kind in the Caribbean and Central America.
The electricity produced by the power plant will be used to run the airport, the Office of the President said.
Trace International built the energy facility, which includes a monitoring and control system.
The solar power plant is one of the "most economical" ways to deal with the Dominican Republic's energy problems, especially the country's dependence on importing "costly and polluting" fossil fuels, Cibao International Airport board chairman Felix Garcia Castellanos said.
Surplus electricity from the power plant will be transferred to utility company Empresa Distribuidora de Electricidad del Norte, or Edenorte, Garcia Castellanos said.
