The project, the country’s second wind farm, will be the largest wind farm in East Africa.
Gamesa, a global technology leader in the wind power industry, has ventured into a new market: Kenya. The company has signed an agreement with local power company Kengen to supply 13.6 MW of turbines for a wind farm Kengen is developing and Iberdrola Ingeniería is constructing.
The Ngong II wind farm, which is 30 kilometres outside Nairobi, will be outfitted with 16 Gamesa G52 turbines, each with capacity of 850 kW. Turbine delivery and installation is scheduled for the first quarter 2014. When Ngong II begins operating (2Q 2014), it will be the second wind farm built in Kenya and the largest wind farm in East Africa, generating enough energy to power more than 9,500 households for one year.
Gamesa first disembarked in Africa in 1999 and now has a presence in Morocco, Tunis, Egypt and South Africa, with nearly 850 MW installed and it manages turbine maintenance on 419 MW.
