A subsidiary of Shunfeng Photovoltaic International Ltd. (Hong Kong) has entered into agreements with Xinjiang authorities to build 1.5 GW solar photovoltaic plants in China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

According to a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange, the subsidiary Shunfeng Investment will implement a project to build a 1,000 MW solar plant by the end of 2015 and a 500 MW solar plant by the end of 2017. The Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps will provide Shunfeng with 35.7 square kilometers of land for both projects.

Investment in the two projects is estimated at $2.6 billion. Xinjiang is very rich in solar energy resources.

China recently announced graded solar tariffs to reduce the subsidies available in areas of lower cost and higher solar irradiation. Xinjiang was split between the first and second most productive tiers of the new program and so receives the lowest and middle rate of subsidy.

China-based mounting system manufacturer Clenergy has recently completed work on a 20.6MW ground mount solar photovoltaic system in Xinjiang’s Yanqi County.

Clenergy said the project covers over 562,000 square meters of land and is located at Yanqi New Energy Industrial Park. The system will have an annual output of 27,000,000 kWh of electricity.
